Flourishing in Ministry
(Optional 24-Hour Retreat After Ministerial)

January 29-30, 2026 (Made for More Ministries)
Resilience is our capacity to adapt, change, and respond to life’s challenges. This will be the theme of our very first Flourishing in Ministry Retreat, where we’ll explore, nurture, and expand this ability together in a warm, welcoming, and uplifting environment.

West Head Wesleyan (Vince Robertson) had fish chowder supper followed by their annual Fisherman’s Service with 70 in attendance. Vince shared, “Half of the offering tonight went to the well project and half to our Souper Saturday ministry.”
  • A local company donated gloves for every person in the fishing industry. High quality insulated rubber gloves for working on lobster, as well as hats, and toques. The West Head family gave them away on behalf of the company – an incredible partnership with the community to support the families of those directly involved in the preparation for Dumping Day later this month.

Trauma-Informed Ministry Training @ Corbett

Did you know two out of three kids will experience at least one traumatic event during their childhood? Trauma can lead kids to feel unsafe, out of control, unloved and worthless. At Corbett (Jason Vienneau) leaders believe the Church has been uniquely positioned to reach into hurting kid’s lives to help them know they are loved, and valued, not only by their leaders, but by God Himself!

The interactive workshops (on November 16 & 23) by Reach Hurting Kids Institute is preparing Corbett volunteers to reach hurting kids in the church community. These sessions are created to help kids leaders:

  • Understand the widespread impact of trauma, and to recognize the signs.
  • Learn tools to de-escalate behavioural problems.
  • Teach all kids effectively.
  • Create safe, life-changing small groups.
  • Learn practical strategies to help hurting kids heal and succeed.

Kids Pastor Diana Billings shared, “Our team at Corbett Kids have been working towards developing this new lens of discipleship to point kids to Christ, even in their most difficult moments.”

Women in Ministry – DS Cohort Concludes

Carla Working of Education & Clergy Development (Executive Director Johanna Rugh) hosted the final of four sessions earlier this month with several district superintendents featuring the leadership of Rob Dixon. Over six hours of interaction and insights we explored a variety of perspectives impacting ordained women to better understand the adverse gender effects they face and learn practical ways to serve as both allies and advocates.

  • This included a very thoughtful response to the “Billy Graham Rule” which has long been both friend and fiend for mixed-gender contexts of pastoral leadership. Alternate models which honour propriety and purpose in living out our calling together were a meaningful part of our discussion. DS Janet Guthrie (Shenandoah District) was elected this summer and provided helpful insights from her personal experiences in both the corporate world and in church leadership.

  • Few things will boost team morale like giving the benefit of the doubt when there’s a question, forgiving quickly, and intentional kindness under pressure. (Dan Reiland)
  • There are plenty of miserable saints who have spent their best energies waging war on their sin or on others’ sin without having hearts renewed by God’s love. (Drew McIntyre)
  • Your values aren’t just what you say—they’re what you’re willing to sacrifice for. Every value you choose demands sacrifice. You can’t avoid trade-offs, only choose better ones. It’s about choosing what you’re willing to give up. Because every meaningful pursuit comes with discomfort. This is the trade-off behind what Aristotle called eudaimonia—a fulfillment built not through pleasure, but through purposeful sacrifice. (Mark Manson)

“The Greatest Gift” used these scriptures and themes as jumping off points for a team of Hispanic pastors to create original sermon outlines in Spanish and for a team of Wesleyan Children’s pastors to create lessons and slides for children that can accompany the adult series. Thank you, Tidal team for generously sharing raw materials for the creation of this free Advent series!

One of our own ministerial team members has also offered the following items for use at no charge. These are two original Christmas plays for use in the local church authored by Brian Gilroy (Island Wesleyan).

Maine Regional Disciple-Maker Conference
Planning Continues!
Six Maine churches were represented by Lead Pastors to plan and prepare for the first Maine regional “Disciple Where You Go” conference, the evening of May 1 and full day May 2. (Note: Mark Soone & Kevin Jackins are not pictured but are also part of this event.)
  • Pastors will gather with Jeff Clark and our Executive Director Tami Mutch-Ketch by Zoom the first week of December with a minimum of one lay leader that they see potential and passion for disciple making, and are willing to join the planning team. We would love for you to join us as well (CLICK HERE for more info).
The planning session this past Wednesday was meaningful and purposeful. Pastors were open and eager to identify the targets and goals for this conference with specific outcomes for their communities. Care and time was provided to planning for how to create momentum along with sharing resources on how to teach and inspire their congregation to be involved. Everyone is committed to teaching the 1:3:2 strategy form Praying on Offense with many presently including this in a teaching series.
  • An unexpected outcome of the day was the commitment to meet in person as Maine pastors on a quarterly basis. The cultural mindset of feeling like they are doing ministry alone was met head on and given a strong kick to the curb with a fresh desire to equip and send their lay to the community to lead the work of sharing the Good News of the Gospel.
Yes, we may be planning a conference but clearly more is happening among our Maine pastors. Each individual expressed their gratitude for the day and what they needed moving forward.
