It’s Monday Again

He is risen! With the celebration of Palm Sunday behind us, we lean into the reflection and inspiration of Holy Week. It will be exciting to see how God blesses the spiritual invasion of His Resurrection power in the days ahead. Two video greeting links (90 Seconds OR Three Minutes) are available here to include in your Easter Service this weekend to provide a broader connection with our Atlantic District family as we face off with the challenges and opportunities of this pandemic.

Cornerstone (Denn Guptill) celebrated its 25th Anniversary yesterday! Our family attended this worship service online and it was inspiring to be reminded of all the ways God has blessed and preserved this special church family in our tribe. Last night, Cornerstone Windgate Site Pastor Rob McDowell held a planning meeting (pictured right) with the core launch team as they continue to prepare for the right timing for this new campus.

In Carey Nieuwhof’s recent book, “Didn’t See It Coming,” he asked this prophetic question:”What if [Church] leaders started thinking of themselves as a digital organization with a physical presence, instead of a physical organization with a digital presence?”

This week two of our local church pastors are coordinating workshops for a Beginners Online Service and an Intermediate Online Service. Here are the Zoom links for you to join in to learn some best practices that may improve the quality of your Easter online presence this weekend:

And speaking of the innovative ways we are experiencing digital Church, the above family has been attending Woodstock (Dale MacDonald) from 2,000 kms away in Iqaluit! As Worship & Connections Pastor Neil Horner says, “People aren’t just hungry for content, they are hungry for community.”

Executive Director Tami Mutch-Ketch convened a time of review and future planning on Friday for our Lay Prayer Task Force. Some of you have already received calls and this growing team will be making contact over the coming weeks and months with our pastoral families to offer encouragement and prayer as you serve and lead on the front lines of ministry. Atlantic Ministers are encouraged to email Tami (tami@atlanticdistrict.com) to recommend additional intercessors for this team. #strongertogether

It was a privilege to join in this week with Peter Hayes and Jennifer White during a new weekly Facebook Live connection with the Solid Rock family. Peter shares, “We are hoping this becomes a regular platform on Friday morning to allow us to hear insights on financial fitness, mental fitness, spiritual fitness, etc. as we navigate these days.” I received this email note last week from one of the Solid Rock LBA members, ” I just wanted to give a shout out to our Pastors Peter and Jennifer for the phenomenal job that they are doing for our church family during these days!”I would love to join in to any of our local church social media connections upon request if I can be an encouragement to your church family.

World Hope International (Canada) Board of Directors convened this week – mostly by Zoom. Chair DS Eric Hallett tag-teamed with Executive Director Tanya Nace and her team providing an inspiring review of the excellent progress for the official relief and development arm of The Wesleyan Church.World Hope International has created an online platform, Get-Support, to help communities and churches stay connected and provide support to one another.  This is a platform where users can submit and respond to requests for assistance from one another. Five churches in the Atlantic District are registered to use Get-Support. If you are interested in using this tool in your church, watch this Webinar that explains how the system works. For more information and to register, https://get-support.ca/

Weekly Meeting Option with the DS. On Wednesday, I met by Zoom with some of our Atlantic Ministers to discuss best practices in these unique days of ministry. We share perspectives on specific challenges/questions/resources and have opportunity to pray for each other. For example, this week one pastor shared about an excellent free resource to track connections with your church family (Planning Center People). We also discussed the above chart from the recent Barna Survey of 1,500 pastors. I would welcome any pastor to join me for this optional Zoom meeting on Thursday, April 9th @ 2:30 p.m. Atlantic Time. (This time changes weekly based on my schedule, just email me for the link if you are interested.)
ATTN: Lead Pastors, Staff Pastors and Ministerial Students
It is that time of year to start thinking about filling out your Annual Service Report (ASR).  You should have gotten an email from Headquarters with your login username.   Below is a link to help you with the process.  Please go to this link before calling the office – https://www.wesleyan.org/asr-and-lcsr-instructions Please call the District Office if you have problems getting logged in or have questions about the process. Also let the District Office know if you didn’t receive an email this week with your username.
Pastoral Transitions/Recalls/Reviews
  • Rich (Katie) Thomas began their ministry in Aroostook County yesterday with a Facebook Live service for his new two-congregation charge with Easton & Community.
  • Congratulations to Luke (Breanne) Anderson (The Lighthouse) on his election this weekend to serve as the next Lead Pastor of Connection! Pending pandemic restrictions, the Andersons will move to Truro at the usual time of pastoral transition in July.
  • Both Matt Maxwell (Journey – pictured above) & Denn Guptill (Cornerstone) received unanimous LBA renewals this week for their respective Extended Calls.
  • Dave (Sonja) Hartlen (Connection) has accepted a position beginning this summer as Assistant Pastor at Perth Andover (Reg Thomas).
  • Dan Burman (Perth Andover) has accepted a position beginning this summer as Pastor of Youth & Media at New Hope (Scott Prime).
  • Nick (Brenda) Wilson (The Reach) has accepted a position beginning this summer as Assistant Pastor at United Wesleyan in Anderson, IN. Thank to the Wilson family for their service on the Atlantic District – you will be missed!
Points to Ponder
  • Crisis doesn’t create your leadership style, instead, it reveals and amplifies what was already there. (Carey Nieuwhof)
  • “What would Jesus do?” is a great question. But a greater question is – what would you do if that person in need was Jesus (Matthew 25:40)? (Bobby Harrington)
  • A good shepherd doesn’t berate his weak, frightened, or struggling sheep.  He adapts and adjusts in order to help them do what they need to do. (Larry Osborne)

COVID-19 Resources

There is little doubt we are in a season of testing and refinement…
not only for the Church, but for her leaders.

What about Beulah Family Camp & Caton’s Island for 2020?
The DBA will meet on April 23rd and will determine the best timeline for decisions to postpone or cancel camps and/or summer ministry events. It would be premature to make decisions at this point, so we are asking all those leading and participating to prepare for the possibility of a normal camp season this summer. In the event of postponement or cancellation, any registrations for rooms or camps will be credited for future use or refunded upon request.

World Hope International – Annual Spring Gala

This inspiring annual event is now rescheduled for Friday, June 19, 2020
at Wesley Hall (Kingswood University). Save the date – registration details above!

Psychologist Dr. David Clark and Sociologist Dr. Nancy Nason-Clark invested their expertise and experience with about 25 Atlantic Ministers in March who joined by Zoom for a session entitled, “Leading in Anxious Times.” David & Nancy graciously agreed to re-record a 45 minute version of this session which is available HERE for your leadership team. Dr. Clark references resources worthy of note including www.anxietycanada.comand the offer by Dr. Clark to add any pastor to his distribution list (email clark@unb.ca) for new resources in development to address “continuous traumatic stress” factors.

The national office of The Wesleyan Church of Canada is pleased to provide access to some helpful documents for the pastors in our Canadian churches. Included in those documents are:
